Description
EMG SX/SX/81X Active Single Coil Pickup in White
This EMG active pickup configuration captures articulate single-coil clarity in the neck and middle positions while delivering the aggressive punch of a humbucker at the bridge. The combination provides both nuanced midrange articulation for recording layered parts and aggressive output for high-gain lead tracking and modern rock/metal sessions.
Recording Tone & Active Electronics
Active EMG circuitry maintains consistent, predictable output across all three positions without the noise floor issues that plague passive designs—critical for clean recording chains and dense multi-tracking. The dual single-coil setup in the neck and middle positions yields classic articulate, chimey character ideal for rhythm guitar recording, while the 81X humbucker bridge pickup generates tight, compressed bass response that sits decisively in dense mixes without muddiness.
Integration & Studio Setup
This three-pickup set installs into standard Stratocaster-style routing with single-coil cavities in the neck and middle positions and a humbucker cavity at the bridge. Active circuitry requires a battery cavity and control circuit integration—ensure your instrument has existing EMG electronics infrastructure or plan for routing and wiring modifications before session work.

At a Glance
This active pickup trio captures articulate single-coil shimmer and extended frequency response in the neck and middle positions while the 81X bridge humbucker provides tight, controlled bass and aggressive output for tracked lead lines and high-gain sessions. The low-noise active circuitry ensures studio-clean recordings across all positions, making it ideal for metal, prog, and hard rock tracking where both definition and punch matter. Frequently Asked Questions
What routing and modifications does my guitar need to accommodate this pickup set?
This set requires standard Stratocaster-style single-coil cavities in the neck and middle positions and a humbucker route in the bridge. Critically, your guitar must have an existing active EMG electronics infrastructure with a battery cavity and control circuit integration, or you will need professional routing and wiring work to install it.
How does the tone differ between the neck, middle, and bridge pickups?
The two SX single coils (neck and middle) deliver classic articulate, chimey character with nuanced midrange clarity. The 81X bridge humbucker generates tight, compressed bass response and aggressive punch ideal for modern rock and metal lead work, bridging single-coil definition with high-output aggression.
Is this pickup set suitable for blues or jazz?
No. This set is engineered for hard rock, metal, progressive, and high-gain applications. The aggressive bridge punch, tight compression, and extended active output are optimized for modern styles and may feel too colored and high-output for traditional blues or jazz playing.
What are the benefits of active circuitry in this pickup configuration?
Active EMG electronics provide consistent output and extended frequency response across all three positions while eliminating the noise susceptibility of passive designs. This ensures low-noise performance in studio sessions and live settings, plus predictable signal strength regardless of pickup position.
What skill level and genres is this set designed for?
This configuration suits intermediate to advanced players and professionals working in hard rock, metal, progressive, and studio high-gain lead work. It excels in modern applications where both articulate midrange definition and aggressive bridge output are required.
