Description
EMG GZR-PHZ Geezer Butler Signature P Bass Pickup in White
The GZR-PHZ is a split-coil passive P-style pickup engineered for deep, articulate bass response without requiring a battery. Geezer Butler's signature design delivers the clarity and punch expected from classic passive topology while maintaining the shielding and construction standards EMG applies across its professional bass line.
Recording & Mix Characteristics
Built with Alnico V magnets, this pickup captures warm, defined low-end with controlled midrange presence—essential for sessions where organic passive tone cuts through a mix without active coloration adding artifacts. The split-coil design minimizes hum while preserving the dimensional character that makes passive P pickups reliable for tracking and overdubs.
Studio Integration & Reliability
Fully shielded construction protects against electromagnetic interference in studio environments, and the 5-wire Quik-Connect output simplifies installation and future modifications without soldering. Stainless steel construction ensures durability and corrosion resistance, critical for consistent performance across extended tracking sessions and long-term studio use.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a battery for this pickup?
No. The GZR-PHZ is fully passive—it requires no battery or external power. It operates purely on the magnetic field of the Alnico V magnet and split-coil design.
Will this pickup work with my existing P bass wiring and controls?
Yes, it is a direct replacement for any P-style pickup slot. The 5-wire Quik-Connect output simplifies installation, though traditional soldering is also supported if your bass wiring requires it.
What genres and playing styles is this pickup suited for?
It excels in funk, jazz, rock, and studio sessions. The warm low-end and controlled midrange character are optimized for articulate, punchy tone—not recommended for extreme metal or heavily dropped tunings.
How does the shielding and construction affect noise and durability?
Fully shielded construction minimizes hum and electromagnetic interference, while stainless steel ensures corrosion resistance and durability through years of stage and studio use.
How does this compare to other passive P pickups?
The GZR-PHZ combines Alnico V magnets, professional EMG shielding standards, and Geezer Butler's signature design. Comparable models include the Seymour Duncan SPB-1, Fender Original P Bass, and Bartolini B4CB—this sits in that lineup with emphasis on hum rejection and organic passive tone.
