What kind of music are these pickups best suited for?

The Het Active set is optimized for metal, thrash metal, and hard rock where high-gain amplification and articulate sustain are priorities. They excel in studio sessions and live settings that demand precision clarity at extreme volumes, but are not recommended for jazz, blues, or country applications.

How long does the battery last, and what power options are available?

The active circuit draws only 160 microamps at 9V, delivering approximately 1500 hours of battery life per charge. The system supports up to 27V DC maximum supply, giving you flexibility in powering configurations depending on your wiring setup.

What's included in the set, and will it drop into my guitar?

The set includes both neck (JH-N) and bridge (JH-B) pickups with ceramic magnets, plus a complete wiring kit with two 25K volume pots, two 25K tone pots, stereo output jack, battery bus, and all necessary cables. Standard 49mm string spacing and short shaft length provide direct drop-in installation into compatible instruments with Tune-O-Matic bridges.

How does the active system keep noise down during studio recording and live performance?

The -100 dB noise floor and active circuitry eliminate hum and unwanted background noise that plagues passive pickups in high-gain applications, ensuring silent operation whether you're recording in the studio or performing live. The 2.11 kHz resonant frequency is tuned to cut through dense mixes while maintaining definition.

How do these compare to other high-output metal pickups?

The Het Active set delivers 4.50V strum voltage and 3.00V string voltage with a tight, focused midrange optimized for metal clarity. Comparable alternatives include the Seymour Duncan Blackouts, EMG 81/85, and Fishman Fluence Modern; the Het set specifically combines James Hetfield's signature aggression with EMG's proven active engineering for studio-grade clarity and stage reliability.

Do I pay sales tax on this order?

We collect sales tax only on orders shipped to California. Orders shipped to any other US state are charged $0 sales tax at checkout when you buy direct from our website. On this item that is roughly $19 less out the door than the same listed price at a national retailer or on a marketplace. Marketplaces such as eBay, Reverb and Amazon collect sales tax in nearly every state as marketplace facilitators no matter who the seller is, so the same item at the same price costs less bought direct. Free US shipping and 30-day returns are included. Some states ask buyers to self-report use tax on out-of-state purchases.

EMG James Hetfield Het Active Humbucker Pickup Set in Brushed Gold

The EMG James Hetfield Het set delivers aggressive, articulate output with the precision engineering of an active humbucker system. Designed in collaboration with Metallica's James Hetfield, these pickups are engineered for heavy, high-gain tracking where clarity and sustain remain intact even at extreme volumes and demanding session work. The brushed gold finish adds visual distinction while the ceramic magnets and active circuitry ensure consistent, reliable performance throughout extended recording sessions.

Tone & Output Performance

These pickups produce a robust output with 4.50V strum voltage and 3.00V string voltage, delivering the headroom and definition necessary for modern metal tracking and mixing. The 2.11 kHz resonant frequency focuses the midrange for cutting through dense mixes, while the -100 dB noise floor keeps unwanted hum completely out of the equation—essential for high-gain amplification capture and studio recording sessions where noise performance directly impacts final product quality.

Active Electronics & Power Management

The active circuit draws only 160 microamps at 9V, yielding approximately 1500 hours of battery life per charge—practical for multi-day tracking sessions without power interruption. The system supports up to 27V DC maximum supply, allowing flexibility in powering configurations. Installation includes complete wiring components: two 25K volume pots, two 25K tone pots, stereo output jack, battery bus, pickup bus, and all necessary cables for seamless integration into any compatible instrument, streamlining studio setup and changeover time.
