Description
EMG HAX Active Single Coil Pickup in White
The EMG HAX captures the articulation and brightness of a single-coil design without the 60-cycle hum—a rare combination that serves producers tracking articulate, modern tones with vintage character in the studio. The compact humbucker-sized housing fits seamlessly into guitars designed for standard pickups, making this an elegant retrofit solution for session players and engineers wanting single-coil definition with active reliability during overdubs and live recording scenarios.
Tone & Recording Performance
Built around an Alnico magnet and paired with EMG's onboard X preamp, this pickup delivers a noiseless signal path while maintaining the bright, cutting response required for clean layering and mix visibility. The active electronics ensure consistent output and frequency response across dynamic playing techniques, from fingerpicked passages to driven rhythm takes—critical for maintaining phase coherence and clean stacking in multi-tracked arrangements.
Installation & Workflow
The solderless installation system eliminates downtime and technical barriers, allowing rapid instrument changes during sessions. The package includes a 25k volume potentiometer, active tone control with VLPF (variable low-pass filter), battery bus, stereo output jack, mounting hardware, and all necessary cables—everything required for immediate integration into your recording setup without studio downtime.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will the HAX fit my guitar?
The HAX uses a humbucker-sized housing, so it fits guitars designed for standard humbuckers or dual-coil pickups. It does not fit traditional single-coil cavities (Stratocaster or Telecaster routes). Installation requires the guitar to have a humbucker cavity and standard electronics cavity for the battery bus and jack.
Do I need to solder anything?
No. The EMG solderless quick-connect installation system eliminates soldering—all connections use plug-and-play cables. The package includes everything needed: volume potentiometer, active tone control, battery bus, stereo output jack, mounting hardware, and all required cables.
What tone should I expect?
You get bright, articulate, cutting single-coil character without hum. The Alnico magnet and onboard X preamp maintain responsive dynamics from delicate picking to aggressive attack, making it well-suited to modern rock, indie, and studio sessions. It is not designed for traditional jazz or blues styles.
How does this compare to other noiseless single-coils?
The HAX differs from passive noiseless options (like Seymour Duncan Duckbucker or DiMarzio Area T) by using active electronics for consistent output and frequency response. The active circuitry and variable low-pass filter offer more tonal control and reliability across dynamic playing, at the trade-off of requiring a 9V battery.
What skill level is this for?
The solderless installation makes it accessible to beginners, but intermediate and advanced players benefit from the active tone shaping and modern tonal versatility. Professional session and live players can rely on its noise-free operation and consistent output in recording and performance contexts.
