Description
EMG H3A Passive Humbucker Pickup in Chrome
The EMG H3A is a passive humbucker engineered to capture classic magnetic character without the complexity of active electronics. Its Alnico V magnets with over-wound coils deliver responsive, articulate output that tracks naturally to pick attack and finger dynamics, making it ideal for recording sessions where dynamic control and authentic passive tone shape the final vocal. This is a straightforward, no-battery-required solution for home studios and tracking rooms that prioritize tone without electronic overhead.
Tonal Profile & Mix Character
Dual resonant peaks at 1.72 kHz and 2.92 kHz shape a midrange-forward response that sits prominently in dense mixes without sacrificing warmth or low-end clarity. The 13.65 kOhm DC resistance and 7.67 Henries inductance create a balanced output suitable for capturing clean articulation during overdubs and handling driven saturation on rhythmic passes, making this pickup versatile across session applications and amplifier pairing.
Installation & Studio Integration
The 5-wire quick-connect output uses EMG's proprietary quick-connect system for rapid harness integration during setup and teardown, minimizing studio downtime between sessions. Standard string spacing and short shaft configuration ensure drop-in compatibility with most modern humbucker routing, while the solid HZ design cover cap in chrome finish provides shielding and visual consistency with professional studio aesthetics.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this pickup passive, or does it need a battery?
The H3A is fully passive — no battery required. It uses Alnico V magnets with over-wound coils to deliver responsive output without active electronics, so you get straightforward wiring and zero maintenance concerns.
Will this pickup work with my guitar's existing humbucker routing?
Yes. The H3A features standard string spacing and a short shaft configuration designed for drop-in compatibility with most modern humbucker routings. The 5-wire quick-connect output integrates easily into existing harnesses using EMG's proprietary connector system.
How does the H3A compare to active EMG pickups like the 81?
The H3A delivers classic passive character and natural dynamic response, while the 81 is an active design offering higher output and more compressed tone. The H3A is best for players who want authentic magnetic feel and no battery dependency; the 81 suits those seeking punchy, aggressive output in heavy genres.
What tone should I expect from the H3A?
The H3A is midrange-forward with dual resonant peaks at 1.72 kHz and 2.92 kHz, delivering articulate, balanced output that cuts through dense mixes without sacrificing warmth. It responds naturally to pick attack and finger dynamics, making it versatile for both clean clarity and warm driven saturation.
Is the H3A suitable for jazz or blues?
The H3A is engineered primarily for studio sessions, hard rock, metal, and gigging situations where cut and articulation are priorities. It is not optimized for jazz or folk applications, which typically call for smoother, less midrange-focused pickups.
