Will this pickup fit my 8-string guitar?

The EMG 85-8XH features a long shaft design for non-standard cavity depths, but fitment varies by instrument. You must verify the pickup bay depth and mounting configuration of your specific 8-string guitar before purchase, as routing differs from standard Fender or Gibson humbucker cavities.

What genres and playing styles is this pickup best suited for?

The 85-8XH is engineered for metal, djent, progressive, and other heavy extended-range styles where clarity and articulation across all eight strings are critical. It is not designed for blues, jazz, or folk applications.

What does an active pickup require for installation?

EMG active pickups require a 9-volt battery and proper preamp wiring. Installation demands electrical knowledge or should be performed by a qualified technician to ensure proper grounding and battery integration.

How does the tone compare to passive 8-string pickups?

The 85-8XH delivers a signature compressed, controlled character with emphasis on midrange presence and noise rejection. It prioritizes punchy articulation on high strings and defined low-end definition on low B and F# strings without excessive bass bloom, making it ideal for cutting through dense mixes.

What hardware and wiring does this include?

The pickup itself is a dual-coil humbucker with ceramic magnet construction and a black cover finish. It is compatible with standard humbucker wiring harnesses; you are responsible for sourcing the 9-volt battery and any preamp or control electronics required for your installation.

EMG 85-8XH Long Shaft 8-String Active Humbucker Pickup in Black

The EMG 85-8XH is a professionally-voiced active humbucker engineered for extended-range 8-string instruments, delivering articulate midrange aggression and controlled low-end response. The long shaft design accommodates deeper pickup cavities and non-standard mounting configurations common in modern 8-string guitar designs. This pickup tracks with precision across all eight strings, cutting through dense arrangements without losing definition on lower extensions—essential for metal and progressive recording sessions where every note must remain intelligible in the final mix.

Recording & Mix Character

Active humbucker designs from EMG prioritize midrange presence and noise rejection, sitting clearly in dense mixes without excessive bass bloom. The 85-8XH maintains the brand's signature compressed, controlled character while balancing the harmonic demands of eight-string tunings—delivering punchy articulation on high strings that captures pick attack detail and defined low-end definition on low B and F# strings that translates well to bass-heavy productions and drop tunings.

Installation & Studio Integration

The long shaft variant accommodates routing depths and mounting hardware that differ from standard Fender or Gibson humbucker cavities, making it essential to verify fitment against your 8-string instrument's pickup bay before purchase. EMG active pickups require a 9-volt battery and proper preamp wiring; installation should be approached with electrical knowledge or performed by a qualified technician. Battery status should be checked before recording sessions to ensure consistent output levels and response throughout your takes.
