Description
EMG 85-8H 8-String Active Humbucker Pickup in Chrome
The EMG 85-8H delivers the articulate, focused response that defines the 85 platform, engineered specifically for extended-range 8-string instruments. This active humbucker combines controlled output with exceptional note definition, making it ideal for modern metal and progressive recording where string clarity across a wider fingerboard is essential for tracking and mixing clarity.
Active Electronics & Power
Built on a 9V battery power source with an impressive 3000-hour battery life, this pickup operates at 3.10 V RMS output and 4.50 V peak output, delivering the compressed, articulate character EMG is known for. The -101 dBV output noise floor ensures minimal hum even in high-gain session work, while 10 kΩ output impedance maintains tight coupling with most audio interfaces, preamps, and studio monitoring chains.
Design & Construction
The close aperture coil design with Alnico V magnets and 1870 Hz resonant frequency shape a tight, punchy midrange that sits focused in dense mixes and cuts through layered arrangements. Installation is straightforward via the solderless system—no rewiring required—and the package includes a split shaft volume/tone control set, output jack, battery clip set, screws, and springs for complete integration into your instrument setup.

Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between the 85-8H and other 8-string pickups like the Seymour Duncan Blackout or DiMarzio Crunchlab?
The 85-8H shares the classic EMG 85 platform's tight, articulate midrange and active circuitry, tuned for extended-range clarity. The Blackout delivers a slightly darker, more compressed character, while the Crunchlab offers a brighter, more aggressive attack. Choose the 85-8H if you prioritize note definition and a balanced, punchy tone that cuts through without harshness.
How long does the 9V battery last, and is it easy to replace?
The 9V battery provides approximately 3000 hours of operating life, which typically translates to over a year of regular playing. The included battery clip set makes replacement straightforward—no soldering required thanks to the solderless system.
Will this pickup work with my current 8-string guitar, or do I need special wiring?
The 85-8H uses EMG's solderless installation system, meaning you can install it without any rewiring. The complete package includes a split shaft volume/tone control set, output jack, battery clip set, screws, and springs for full integration into most standard 8-string guitars.
Is this pickup suitable for blues or jazz, or is it only for metal?
The 85-8H's tight, compressed character and focused midrange are optimized for metal and progressive music where clarity and cut-through are priorities. Its controlled output and aggressive voice make it less suited to the dynamic, open tones typically needed in blues and jazz applications.
What skill level do I need to install this pickup?
Intermediate to advanced players can handle installation thanks to the solderless system and included hardware. If you've worked with guitar electronics before or are comfortable with basic hand tools, you'll find the process straightforward.
