Description
EMG 81-8XH 8-String Active Humbucker Pickup in Brushed Chrome
The EMG 81-8XH delivers the aggressive, articulate voice essential for recording modern 8-string metal and extended-range work. This active humbucker cuts through dense tunings with exceptional clarity and response, maintaining definition even at extreme saturation levels. Built for producers and engineers tracking precision performances with tight harmonic control across all eight strings.
Tonal Character & Recording Response
The 81-8XH combines EMG's signature compressed midrange with enhanced high-end definition, producing the punchy, focused attack that translates clearly to tape and digital workstations. Its output balances aggression with articulation—heavy enough for drop tunings and distortion-heavy tracking sessions, but responsive enough to preserve note separation and dynamic range through complex chord voicings in the mix.
Construction & Studio Integration
This 8-string configuration fits standard 8-string bridge positions and integrates seamlessly with EMG's active preamp ecosystem for consistent session performance. The brushed chrome finish resists fingerprints and corrosion while delivering a professional aesthetic that maintains visual consistency across studio documentation and production files.

Frequently Asked Questions
What genres and tunings is the 81-8XH designed for?
The 81-8XH excels in metal, djent, and extended-range styles, especially in drop tunings and heavy saturation contexts. It is not voiced for jazz, blues, or folk applications.
How does the active design affect tone and response?
The active humbucker design delivers high output and a compressed, focused midrange with enhanced high-end articulation. This gives you punchy attack and tight tracking across all eight strings, even at extreme gain levels, while maintaining note separation in complex voicings.
Is the 81-8XH compatible with my current 8-string guitar?
The 81-8XH is configured for bridge position installation on standard 8-string instruments and integrates seamlessly with EMG's active preamp ecosystem. Verify your guitar's pickup cavity dimensions and active preamp compatibility before purchase.
How does it compare to passive 8-string pickups?
The active 81-8XH delivers higher output, tighter tracking, and more articulation than passive designs, making it better suited for modern metal and djent where clarity under saturation is critical. Comparable active alternatives include the Seymour Duncan Pegasus 8-String, DiMarzio Fusion Edge 8-String, and Fishman Fluence Modern 8-String.
What is the brushed chrome finish, and does it affect tone?
The brushed chrome finish is a cosmetic and protective coating that resists fingerprints and corrosion while giving the pickup a professional, distinctive look. It does not affect the pickup's electrical performance or tone.
