Description
EMG 81-7XH 7-String Active Humbucker Pickup in Gold
The EMG 81-7XH brings the legendary tight, articulate character of the 81 platform to 7-string sessions, engineered to cut through extended tunings with surgical clarity and responsive dynamics. This active humbucker maintains definition and separation in dense arrangements and heavy-gain recordings, preserving note definition where passive pickups struggle.
Active Design & Recording Performance
Built on EMG's proven active circuit, the 81-7XH generates high output with low noise—essential for tracking clean, punchy takes without noise floor issues during post-production. The active design ensures consistent signal integrity and eliminates the loading effects that passive pickups introduce, translating to faster transient capture and tighter bass definition across all seven strings during both recording and mixing.
Installation & Construction
The pickup features solderless wiring for straightforward installation and swaps without requiring soldering skills, keeping studio downtime minimal. The gold finish provides both visual distinction and corrosion resistance, while the humbucker architecture delivers dual-coil rejection of electromagnetic interference—critical when tracking in rooms with multiple devices and RF sources.

Frequently Asked Questions
What tunings and genres is the 81-7XH best suited for?
The 81-7XH excels in modern metal, djent, progressive, and hard rock contexts where tight articulation and controlled low-end definition are essential. It is not recommended for jazz, blues, or folk styles, where its high-output active design and surgical clarity would not align with typical tonal goals.
Does this pickup require soldering to install?
No. The 81-7XH features EMG's solderless quick-connect wiring system, allowing installation and maintenance without soldering skills. It drops directly into standard humbucker routes.
What power source does the active circuit need?
The 81-7XH requires a 9V battery or external power supply to operate its active circuit. The active design eliminates loading effects from passive pickups and ensures consistent signal integrity and low noise.
Can I use this pickup in both bridge and neck positions?
Yes, the 81-7XH is designed for bridge or neck position mounting and is compatible with standard humbucker routes on 7-string guitars.
How does the active design improve tone compared to passive pickups?
The active circuit generates high output with low noise, delivers faster transient response, and maintains tighter bass definition across all seven strings without the phase-loading effects that passive pickups experience in high-gain applications.
