Description
EMG 81-7XH 7-String Active Humbucker Pickup in Black
The EMG 81-7XH is a high-output active humbucker engineered for 7-string instruments, delivering the aggressive, articulate response essential for tracking modern metal and extended-range material. This ceramic-magnet design cuts through dense tunings with clarity and punch, maintaining note definition even under extreme gain processing. The compact footprint integrates seamlessly into 7-string cavities while the solderless installation minimizes session setup time.
Tone & Output Characteristics
The 81-7XH produces a peak output voltage of 1.75 V with an RMS output of 1.25 V, providing the aggressive front end necessary for modern high-gain recording applications. A resonant frequency of 2.25 kHz combined with ceramic magnets and close aperture coils creates a focused, midrange-forward response that excels at articulation and sustain without sacrificing clarity in dense chord voicings—critical for layering and mix separation.
Electronics & Installation
This active pickup runs on a 9V battery with exceptionally low current draw—80 µA @ 9V—yielding approximately 3000 hours of battery life between replacements, ensuring uninterrupted sessions and tracking. The solderless construction and 10 kΩ output impedance enable fast installation and reconfiguration, while the -91 dBV output noise floor guarantees clean signal integrity without hum or artifacts that compromise recording quality.

Frequently Asked Questions
What makes the 81-7XH different from standard 7-string pickups?
The 81-7XH is an active ceramic-magnet humbucker with a resonant peak at 2.25 kHz and close aperture coils, engineered to deliver articulate, midrange-forward tone at extreme gain levels while maintaining clarity in drop tunings. Its high output (1.75 V peak) and focused response are specifically voiced for metal and djent applications on 7-string instruments.
How long does the 9V battery last?
The 81-7XH draws only 80 µA at 9V, yielding approximately 3000 hours of battery life—roughly 4 months of regular playing before replacement is needed.
Is solderless installation really beginner-friendly?
Yes; the solderless construction eliminates the need for a soldering iron and flux cleanup, making installation straightforward for intermediate players and above. No special tools are required beyond basic hex wrenches and a screwdriver.
Will this pickup work in a standard 7-string cavity?
Yes. The 81-7XH housing measures 38 x 89 mm and is designed to fit standard 7-string humbucker cavities without routing or modification.
What genres is this pickup best suited for?
The 81-7XH is engineered for metal, djent, and extended-range playing where aggressive output, articulation, and tight midrange focus are priorities. It is not recommended for jazz, blues, or folk applications.
