Description
EMG 81-7H 7-String Active Humbucker Pickup in Gold
The EMG 81-7H is a bridge-position active humbucker engineered specifically for 7-string instruments, capturing aggressive articulation and tight low-end definition in the studio. This pickup combines ceramic magnets with close-aperture coils to record the extended range of modern extended-range guitars while maintaining the clarity and punch that defines the 81 lineage—essential for sessions requiring transparent tracking and punchy mix presence.
Design & Recording Characteristics
Built with ceramic magnets and close-aperture coils, the 81-7H produces focused treble response and controlled bass ideal for heavy styles and studio tracking. The solderless wiring system simplifies installation and reduces setup time, allowing faster instrument prep between takes and straightforward integration into existing pedalboards or audio chains.
Active Electronics & Setup
This active pickup ships with a complete electronics package: 25k volume potentiometer, 25k tone potentiometer, battery bus, stereo output jack, mounting hardware, and connecting cables. The active circuit requires battery power to operate, delivering consistent output levels across tracking sessions and eliminating passive impedance coloration that can complicate mix balancing.

Frequently Asked Questions
What comes in the box with the EMG 81-7H?
The pickup ships with a complete electronics package including a 25k volume potentiometer, 25k tone potentiometer, battery bus, stereo output jack, mounting hardware, and connecting cables — everything needed for a full retrofit or new build.
Does this pickup require a battery?
Yes, the 81-7H is an active pickup that requires battery power to operate. The active circuit delivers consistent output levels and eliminates passive impedance coloration, ensuring stable tone across playing dynamics.
What genres and tunings is the 81-7H best suited for?
This pickup excels in metal, djent, progressive, and drop-tuning contexts where tight lows and aggressive articulation are priorities. Its ceramic magnets and close-aperture coils are designed to maintain clarity and punch in extended-range instruments, making it less ideal for jazz, blues, or folk applications.
How does the solderless wiring system work?
The solderless system uses quick-connect terminals instead of solder joints, simplifying installation and reducing setup time — especially useful when working in tightly routed pickup cavities or doing retrofits without specialized soldering skills.
Can I compare this to other 7-string active pickups?
The EMG 81-7H competes directly with the Seymour Duncan Blackouts 7-String, Fishman Fluence Modern 7-String, and DiMarzio D-Activator. The 81-7H emphasizes focused treble and tight bass control, making it a solid choice if you prioritize articulation and punch in heavy tunings.
