Description
EMG 81-7H 7-String Active Humbucker Pickup in Chrome
The EMG 81-7H captures tight, articulate response essential for modern metal and hard rock production, with a ceramic magnet design optimized for the extended low-end demands of seven-string instruments. This active humbucker offers controlled output and minimal noise floor, making it an excellent choice for home-studio and professional recording applications where clarity in dense, downtuned riffing and fast lead work directly impacts mix quality. The brushed black chrome finish pairs functional durability with professional aesthetics.
Tone & Output Characteristics
The pickup produces a 3.00 V RMS output (4.50 V peak) that integrates cleanly into tracking and mixing workflows without excessive gain staging, while the 1630 Hz resonant frequency emphasizes upper-midrange definition ideal for cutting through dense arrangements during both recording and final mix. Noise performance of −100 dBV ensures clean switching and minimal hum during sessions, even at high gain levels typical in extended-range applications.
Installation & Power
The included EMG solderless install system with prewired split-shaft volume and tone controls (both 25k potentiometers, 9.5 mm shaft length) accelerates instrument setup between sessions and eliminates soldering risk. Battery operation via a standard 9 V power source delivers 3000 hours of battery life, and the provided battery clip and output jack complete the system, keeping recording downtime minimal.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this pickup suitable for styles outside metal and hard rock?
The EMG 81-7H is optimized for metal, hard rock, djent, and drop-tuning applications and is not recommended for jazz, blues, or folk contexts. Its tight, articulate voicing and controlled output are engineered specifically for high-gain and extended-range playing.
What's included in the box, and do I need to solder?
The pickup ships with the EMG solderless install system, prewired 25k volume and tone controls, a 9 V battery clip, and an output jack. No soldering is required; the solderless system significantly speeds installation and eliminates soldering risk.
How long does the battery last?
The 9 V battery provides 3000 hours of continuous operation, which typically translates to several months of regular playing before replacement is needed.
How does the EMG 81-7H compare to the Seymour Duncan Blackouts 7 or Fishman Fluence Modern 7?
All three are active designs for extended-range guitars, but the 81-7H emphasizes a tighter low end and upper-midrange articulation at 1630 Hz, making it particularly strong for clarity in dense downtuned riffing. The Blackouts and Fluence are also highly respected; choose based on your specific tone preference and whether you want a fixed voicing (81-7H) or modeling/switching options (Fluence).
Will this pickup work in my 7-string guitar?
The EMG 81-7H is a standard humbucker format designed for 7-string guitars. Confirm your guitar accepts humbucker pickups and measure the cavity to ensure fit; the included prewired controls and solderless system are universal across EMG active designs.
