Description
EMG 81-7H 7-String Active Humbucker Pickup in Brushed Black Chrome
The EMG 81-7H is a high-output active humbucker engineered specifically for seven-string instruments, delivering the articulate aggression and extended frequency response that modern extended-range playing demands. Its brushed black chrome finish maintains a professional aesthetic while the compact profile integrates cleanly into most seven-string guitar cavities. In the studio, this pickup captures tighter, more defined lows and controlled midrange clarity—eliminating the noise floor inherent to passive designs and providing a clean, traceable foundation for layering, processing, and mixing extended-range material.
Active Electronics & Installation
This is a complete active system featuring EMG's exclusive solderless install architecture, which eliminates traditional soldering and significantly reduces setup time in the studio. The pickup ships with a battery clip, output jack, and prewired split-shaft volume and tone control set — everything required for a straightforward installation in a properly routed cavity, so you can focus on recording rather than troubleshooting wiring.
Recording & Tone Character
The ceramic magnet core produces the signature EMG 81 voicing: percussive transient attack, compressed sustain, and a darker tonal character that cuts through dense mixes and sits naturally under high-gain processing and drop tunings. Both potentiometers are rated at 25k ohms with 9.5 mm shaft length, ensuring responsive volume and tone shaping with minimal loading effects on the preamp stage, giving you transparent control during recording and mixing sessions.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this pickup suitable for genres other than metal?
The EMG 81-7H is optimized for metal, djent, and drop tunings; it is not recommended for jazz, blues, or folk applications. Its high-output, compressed character and darker voicing are engineered specifically for high-gain contexts.
What comes in the box and what installation skills do I need?
The pickup ships with a complete active system including battery clip, output jack, prewired volume and tone controls, mounting screws, and springs. EMG's solderless install architecture eliminates traditional soldering, making installation significantly faster for intermediate or advanced players working with a properly routed 7-string cavity.
How does the EMG 81-7H compare to other 7-string pickups?
The EMG 81-7H competes with the Seymour Duncan Blackout 7-String, DiMarzio Crunchlab 7-String, and Fishman Fluence Modern 7-String. All are high-output active designs for extended-range play; the 81-7H emphasizes percussive attack and tight lows with a darker overall character.
What are the pickup dimensions and will it fit my 7-string?
The pickup measures 4.00 inches wide, 1.00 inch tall, and 8.00 inches deep. It is engineered as a direct replacement for 7-string guitars with standard humbucker cavities; confirm your guitar's cavity dimensions before purchasing.
Does this require a battery, and what about the noise floor?
Yes, the active system requires a battery (clip included); active electronics eliminate the hum and noise floor inherent to passive designs, making the 81-7H ideal for high-gain recording and live contexts where clarity matters.
