Description
EMG 66TW Active Humbucker Pickup in Black
The EMG 66TW captures thick, articulate tones with the flexibility of dual-mode switching—a hybrid humbucker engineered to deliver both high-output aggression and nuanced single-coil character in the studio. The increased profile sits proud in the cavity, translating to enhanced string coupling and a more pronounced midrange punch than standard EMG humbuckers. This is a workhorse pickup for modern rock, metal, and hard-hitting sessions where clarity and definition matter as much as raw power when tracking.
Tone & Electronics
The hybrid magnet design—combining ceramic and alnico—creates a tonal sweet spot that avoids the brittleness of pure ceramic while maintaining the aggressive articulation active electronics provide. Rated at 10K DC resistance with 5-conductor wiring, the 66TW unlocks both humbucker and single-coil voices in your recordings, letting you capture everything from tight, focused lead takes to warm, touch-sensitive rhythm tones without swapping pickups between passes.
Design & Build
The 1.1" thickness—a full 0.22" deeper than standard EMG humbuckers—increases magnetic field strength and sustain while maintaining compatibility with standard 6-string humbucker cavities. Solderless installation and battery-powered active circuitry make retrofit straightforward, and the all-metal construction with black finish integrates seamlessly into any modern instrument setup.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will the 66TW fit my guitar without modifications?
Yes—the 66TW is compatible with standard 6-string humbucker cavities. It is 1.1" thick (0.22" thicker than standard EMG humbuckers), but fits within existing cavity dimensions. Installation is solderless, making retrofit straightforward.
Can I use both humbucker and single-coil tones from this one pickup?
Yes. The 5-conductor wiring and dual-mode voice switching let you toggle between full humbucker and single-coil voices without physically swapping pickups. The hybrid ceramic-alnico magnet design keeps both modes articulate and aggressive.
What genres and playing styles is the 66TW best suited for?
The 66TW is engineered for metal, hard rock, modern rock, and extended-range playing where high-output clarity and focus are priorities. It is not voiced for jazz, blues, or folk—it excels in tight, defined, aggressive applications.
How does the 66TW compare to other high-output EMG pickups?
The 66TW sits between the EMG 81 and 85 in character. Its hybrid magnet design and thicker profile deliver more articulation and midrange punch than a standard 85, and the dual-mode switching adds tonal flexibility that fixed-voice pickups like the 81 do not offer.
Does it require a battery?
Yes. The 66TW uses battery-powered active circuitry for its high-output response and voice-switching capabilities. Active electronics require a 9V battery in the instrument.
