Description
EMG 66-7H 7-String Active Humbucker Pickup in Red
The EMG 66-7H is a purpose-built active humbucker for extended-range 7-string instruments, engineered to deliver aggressive midrange definition and articulate high-end clarity in recording and live tracking sessions. Its compact footprint and hot output integrate seamlessly into existing wiring harnesses, while the included complete electronics package streamlines setup and minimizes session downtime.
Tone & Output Characteristics
This pickup produces a 4.5V strum output and 3V single-string output, providing the aggressive midrange punch and articulate high-end definition that define EMG's active sound. The 1.61 kHz resonant frequency positions this pickup in the presence peak, ensuring your recorded takes cut through dense mixes without sacrificing clarity on fast legato passages or complex harmonic layers.
Electronics & Power Specifications
Built on a 9V battery power requirement, the 66-7H delivers 600 hours of battery life per set with a maximum supply voltage of 27V DC. The -100 dB output noise floor and 10 kOhm output impedance ensure clean signal transmission to your interface and preamps with minimal noise coloration, while the 400 microamp current draw keeps power consumption efficient across extended recording sessions.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the output and how hot is this pickup?
The 66-7H delivers 4.5V on full strum and 3V on single-string output—hot enough for high-gain applications without losing articulation. Its 1.61 kHz resonant frequency is centered in the presence peak, so attacks cut through mixes while fast legato stays clear.
What's included in the box and how hard is installation?
The complete wiring kit includes 25k volume and tone potentiometers, stereo output jack, two-pickup in/out bus, battery bus, mounting screws, and all necessary cables. The compact 3.5 x 1.5 inch housing is optimized for seven-string caps and integrates seamlessly into existing harnesses.
How long does the battery last and what are the power specs?
A 9V battery provides 600 hours of playable time per set. The pickup draws only 400 microamps and supports up to 27V DC maximum supply voltage, with a -100 dB output noise floor for clean signal transmission.
Is this pickup right for my genre and playing style?
The 66-7H excels in metal, progressive, and extended-range styles with drop tunings and fast articulation. It is not voiced for jazz, blues, or acoustic folk—those genres benefit from warmer, lower-output designs.
How does this compare to the 81-7H or other 7-string pickups?
The 66-7H is the compact neck-position alternative in EMG's 7-string lineup. The 81-7H offers higher output; the 66-7H balances aggression with articulation for clarity on fast passages. Seymour Duncan Hyperion and Fishman Fluence Modern 7-String are passive alternatives with different tonal characters.
