Description
EMG 66-7H 7-String Active Humbucker Pickup in Black Chrome
The EMG 66-7H is a high-output active humbucker engineered specifically for extended-range 7-string instruments, capturing tight low-end articulation and aggressive midrange presence with clarity and control. This pickup combines Alnico V magnets with ceramic pole pieces to produce a focused, defined tone that sits clearly in dense mixes and maintains string-to-string definition across extended tunings. The black chrome finish integrates seamlessly into modern instrument aesthetics while the compact 7-string extended series housing ensures reliable fit and performance.
Tone & Output Characteristics for Recording
Output reaches 4.5V on strum and 3V per single string, delivering the aggressive gain and clarity needed to capture aggressive playing styles and extended tunings with authority. The 1.61 kHz resonant frequency places the pickup's peak response in the upper-midrange, emphasizing pick attack and harmonic definition for cutting through mix content. A noise floor of -100 dB (60 Hz) ensures clean recording-ready operation even when tracking at high gain settings or stacking multiple guitar layers.
Electronics & Power
This active design runs on a 9V battery with exceptional efficiency—a complete pickup set draws only 400 microamps, yielding up to 600 hours of battery life per installation. The included electronics package handles all wiring needs with integrated volume and tone controls, battery bus, stereo output jack, pickup in/out buses, and all necessary cables for fast integration into your signal chain.

Frequently Asked Questions
What makes this pickup different from EMG's standard 81-7 or other 7-string models?
The 66-7H is engineered for tighter low-end articulation and more aggressive midrange presence than comparable models, with a 1.61 kHz resonant frequency that emphasizes pick attack and harmonic definition. It delivers 3V per single string and 4.5V on strum, ensuring clarity even in heavily detuned and layered rigs without sacrificing the tight, focused tone extended-range players need.
How long does the battery last, and what's included in the electronics package?
A single 9V battery powers the entire pickup set for up to 600 hours of use thanks to efficient 400-microamp draw. The package includes volume and tone pots (both 25k), battery bus, stereo output jack, pickup in/out buses, mounting screws, pickup cable, connect cables, output cable, and battery cable—everything needed for a complete installation.
Will this pickup stay clean and quiet at high gain settings?
Yes—the active design maintains a -100 dB noise floor at 60 Hz, ensuring noise-free operation even with extreme gain stacking. Combined with the tight, controlled tone from Alnico V magnets and ceramic pole pieces, the 66-7H stays articulate and defined without feedback or hum in high-gain metal and djent applications.
Is this pickup suitable for jazz, blues, or other non-metal genres?
No—the 66-7H is purpose-built for metal, djent, progressive, and other extended-range heavy styles. Its aggressive midrange peak and high output characteristics are optimized for thick, distorted tones rather than the smooth, dynamic response jazz and blues players typically seek.
What skill level do I need to install this pickup?
Intermediate to advanced players comfortable with soldering and pickup installation can handle this setup independently. The included wiring diagram and complete electronics package simplify the process, though professional installation is recommended if you're unfamiliar with active pickup systems.
