Description
EMG 60AX Long Shaft Active Humbucker Pickup in Gold
The EMG 60AX captures articulate, controlled aggression with the clarity that active electronics bring to recorded sessions. This covered humbucker maintains tight low-end definition while preserving midrange presence, translating well across high-gain tracking and moderate-level overdubs. The long shaft potentiometer design accommodates thicker pickguards and custom builds without modification.
Electronics & Tone Character
Active ceramic-magnet design with 2K DC resistance and 2.28 kHz resonant frequency produces focused output with minimal noise—essential for clean, articulate recordings across rock, metal, and fusion sessions. The onboard preamp requires a single 9V battery, delivering consistent gain and frequency response that passive pickups cannot match, ensuring stable takes and predictable mix-ready tones.
Construction & Installation
Solderless connectors streamline wiring and reduce setup time in the studio, while the covered design reduces electromagnetic noise and hum for cleaner signal paths. The long shaft potentiometer (18.7mm threaded) fits custom control-cavity depths for integrated studio builds.

Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between the 60AX and EMG's 81 or 85 models?
The 60AX balances EMG's active clarity with a warmer, more balanced tone suited to rock, metal, and fusion. The 81 is brighter and more aggressive; the 85 is darker and fatter. The 60AX lands in the middle, offering articulate midrange without sacrificing warmth.
Do I need a battery for this pickup?
Yes, the 60AX requires a single 9V battery to power its onboard preamp. The solderless connectors include a battery lead for easy installation.
Will this fit my guitar without modification?
The long shaft potentiometer (18.7mm threaded) is designed for custom builds and guitars with thicker pickguards or extended control-cavity depth. Standard pickups use shorter shafts, so confirm your cavity depth before ordering.
Is this pickup suitable for blues or jazz?
The EMG 60AX is voiced for high-gain rock, metal, and fusion with tight lows and articulate tone. Blues and jazz players typically prefer passive pickups or humbuckers with warmer, more open character.
What does the covered design do?
The cover reduces electromagnetic noise and hum while providing a sleek aesthetic. It also protects the coils and magnet assembly without affecting tone.
