Description
EMG 60-8X 8-String Active Humbucker Pickup in Black
The EMG 60-8X is a high-output active humbucker engineered specifically for 8-string extended-range instruments, delivering aggressive attack and clarity across a wider frequency range than standard 6-string designs. Built with ceramic magnets and EMG's proven active circuitry, this pickup cuts through dense tunings with articulate definition and punchy midrange presence. The black soapbar-style housing integrates cleanly into modern instrument aesthetics while maintaining the durability required for consistent studio tracking and live session work.
Tone & Recording Characteristics
The 60-8X produces bright attack with controlled resonance, favoring definition over bloom—essential for recording modern metal, progressive, and djent where string-to-string clarity across eight strings directly impacts mix separation and tone clarity on tape. Its ceramic magnet construction and active electronics generate sufficient output to drive high-gain amp stages without muddiness, even when stacked with other active pickups or pushed through thick distortion chains, making it ideal for layered guitar arrangements and reamping workflows.
Installation & Studio Workflow
Designed as an 8-string-specific humbucker, the 60-8X fits standard humbucker cavities on extended-range instruments and includes EMG's solderless quick-connect system for fast installation and removal—useful for quick pickup swaps between tracking sessions or A/B comparisons during production. The active design requires a 9V battery housed in the instrument's control cavity—verify your guitar's electronics configuration before purchasing to ensure compatibility with active pickup wiring.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the EMG 60-8X designed for, and how does it compare to the EMG 81-8X?
The 60-8X is engineered specifically for 8-string guitars in metal, djent, progressive, and drop-tuning applications where articulate midrange and bright attack matter. Compared to the 81-8X, the 60-8X emphasizes definition and controlled resonance over raw output, making it better suited for modern tones that prioritize string clarity across extended range.
Does the EMG 60-8X require soldering, and what power does it need?
No, the 60-8X includes EMG's solderless quick-connect system for fast installation and removal without soldering. It requires a 9V battery housed in your guitar's control cavity; verify your instrument's wiring configuration before purchasing to ensure compatibility with active pickup electronics.
Will this pickup fit my 8-string guitar?
The 60-8X is designed with a standard humbucker footprint and fits standard humbucker cavities on 8-string extended-range instruments. Confirm your guitar's cavity dimensions and active electronics configuration before ordering to ensure proper fit and power compatibility.
Is the EMG 60-8X suitable for jazz or blues?
No, the 60-8X is optimized for high-gain modern metal, djent, and progressive applications where aggressive clarity and tight definition are priorities. Its bright attack and punchy character are designed for heavy distortion and extended-range tunings rather than the warm, blooming tones typical of jazz and blues playing.
What tone should I expect from this pickup?
Expect bright attack with articulate midrange response, punchy definition, and high output that cuts through dense tunings without muddiness. The ceramic magnet construction and active electronics deliver aggressive clarity and tight resonance ideal for modern metal and progressive styles with heavy distortion.
