Description
EMG 58X Long Shaft Active Humbucker Pickup in Black
The EMG 58X captures fat, round classic humbucker tone with the clarity and responsiveness essential for tight recording sessions. This high-output pickup tracks articulation across the frequency spectrum, maintaining definition in dense mixes while delivering the power needed for aggressive rhythm work or cutting lead tones in both bridge and neck positions.
Tone & Active Electronics
Built around an Alnico magnet with two steel bars, the 58X produces a warm, open tone that sits well in contemporary mixes, enhanced by increased dynamic range and headroom from the X series preamp. The integrated active tone control (VLPF) allows you to attenuate high frequencies during tracking or mixdown, giving you precise sculpting capability without sacrificing the pickup's core musicality—critical when layering multiple guitar passes or blending with synths.
Installation & Workflow
The solderless installation system minimizes setup friction and reduces downtime between sessions, while the included potentiometers and output jack are pre-configured for immediate integration into your signal chain. This pickup ships complete with all necessary hardware: two 25k volume potentiometers, one 25k tone potentiometer, battery bus, stereo output jack, mounting screws, springs, and connecting cables.

Frequently Asked Questions
What's included in the box, and do I need extra wiring parts?
The EMG 58X ships complete: two 25k volume potentiometers, one 25k tone potentiometer, battery bus, stereo output jack, mounting screws, springs, and connecting cables. The solderless installation system means you won't need a soldering iron, and all components are pre-configured for plug-and-play integration.
Is this pickup suitable for jazz or traditional styles?
The 58X is optimized for metal, hard rock, progressive, and heavy blues—it excels in high-gain and aggressive playing contexts. It's not recommended for traditional jazz or folk music, where its high-output character and active circuitry would be mismatched to the genre's tonal expectations.
How does the active tone control work?
The integrated VLPF (Variable Low-Pass Filter) active tone control lets you attenuate high frequencies, giving you real-time sculpting capability during playing or recording without losing the pickup's inherent musicality and definition.
What's the difference between the 58X and EMG's 81/85 pickups?
The 58X uses Alnico magnets with two steel bars for a warmer, rounder classic humbucker tone, while the 81/85 models emphasize tighter, more aggressive responses. The 58X excels in styles where openness and musicality matter alongside power; the 81/85 favor extreme saturation and tightness.
Can I use this in both bridge and neck position?
Yes, the 58X is voiced to work well in either bridge or neck position. The high output and fat tone work for aggressive bridge use, and the warm, open character also pairs well as a neck pickup for complex voicings and smoother lead tones.
