Frequently asked questions
Which guitar is better for metal and extended-range tuning?
The Sun Valley Super Shredder PT FR is purpose-built for metal with high-output EMG pickups, a Floyd Rose locking tremolo, and a speed-focused neck profile. The PT Special is designed for rock, blues, and indie applications and is not recommended for metal or djent playing.
What's the key electronics difference?
The Shredder uses paired EMG RetroActive Hot 70 humbuckers with independent volume controls for aggressive tones. The PT Special uses a single-coil/humbucker pairing with a Series-Parallel push-pull tone control that rewires the circuit for expanded tonal range, favoring versatility over output.
Which neck profile is more comfortable for different playing styles?
The Shredder's Thin-C profile is optimized for speed and aggressive playing. The PT Special's C profile (.826" to .905") is more traditional and sits naturally across all hand positions, making it equally comfortable for clean work, bending, and varied playing techniques.
Are the B-stock cosmetic issues significant?
The Shredder has minor cosmetic fretboard marks with complete structural and tonal integrity. The PT Special has a hairline crack in the neck pocket that is purely cosmetic and does not affect playability or structural strength—both offer substantial savings over new units.
