Frequently asked questions
What's the main difference in string count and scale length?
The Simon Gallup Ultra Spitfire is a 4-string bass with 34-inch scale, while the FreeZesicle Riot-5 offers five strings with a 35-inch scale. The extra string and half-inch longer scale on the Riot-5 provide extended lower register access and tighter string tension.
How do the pickup and electronics differ?
The Spitfire uses EMG TBHZ pickups with a Volume/Volume/Tone passive control for straightforward tonal shaping. The Riot-5 pairs EMG 40J and 40P pickups with an active 3-band EQ and 18-volt battery system, offering more comprehensive frequency shaping and dynamic range.
Which bass is better for aggressive picked playing?
The Simon Gallup Ultra Spitfire is specifically engineered for articulate picked work with its TBHZ pickups and neck-thru construction optimized for clarity and sustain. The Riot-5 excels at both picked and fingerstyle but prioritizes overall frequency shaping over picked attack specificity.
How do construction methods affect tone and stability?
The Spitfire's neck-thru mahogany design maximizes sustain and resonance through the entire instrument. The Riot-5's bolt-on swamp ash body with carbon-fiber-reinforced neck prioritizes stability and fatigue-free playability while maintaining a focused midrange cut.
