Frequently asked questions
Which guitar handles high-gain better?
The Nick Johnston Traditional HH is specifically designed for controlled high-gain with reduced feedback through its Atom-Bucker pickups and articulate midrange. The Tori Ruffin offers punchy aggression but is voiced more broadly across blues and rock rather than pure metal precision.
Are the neck profiles different?
Both have vintage C profiles, but the Nick Johnston measures 0.825" at the 1st fret and 0.865" at the 12th, while the Tori Ruffin measures 20.32mm and 21.59mm respectively—very similar thickness with slightly different construction (wenge vs. roasted hard rock maple).
Which has better frets for bending?
The Tori Ruffin uses jumbo frets, which offer slightly easier access and control for aggressive bending. The Nick Johnston uses premium Jescar German silver frets, which prioritize durability and sustain over bend accessibility.
Can either handle jazz?
Both are rated as not ideal for traditional jazz due to their pickup configurations and voice. The Tori Ruffin's three-pickup setup offers more tonal flexibility than the Nick Johnston's dual-pickup design, making it marginally better suited if jazz playing is considered.
